Dreaming of a White Christmas

Posted by mike on December 10th, 2007

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know… but instead, it’s cold, gray, and rainy. Blah. If it’s going to rain and be nasty outside, I wish it would just snow. When I was a kid, it seems we would get snow practically every December. It was enough to actually justify owning a sled. My grandma used to tell me tales of her father driving cattle across the Ohio River to market in Louisville. It actually got cold enough for the river to freeze! That had to have been around 1916-17, when our area had a bad winter. She would have been 7-8 years old then.

These days, it seems the snow falls all around us… the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee to the south, the midwestern cities like St. Louis and Kansas City to the west, places like Cincinnati and Pennsylvania to the East, and of course Indianapolis and Chicago to the north. Meanwhile, we sit here in this godforsaken pit known as the ‘Ohio Valley’ and get nothing but leftover crud. We are like the dividing line of all weather fronts, it seems. I don’t like it. I like my weather to be predictable.

Anyhow… apparently there is a *slight* chance we could get some snow this weekend. Three of four prediction models show it happening… at least one significantly (6-8 inches). I don’t see us getting pounded, really. It’s been too warm and wet. But man… I’d love to see us get a nice 3-5″ snow, especially if it gave us time to clear the roads but stuck around elsewhere for Christmas. I know the kids would love it. We haven’t had a good “ground covering” snow since my daughter was 1-2 years old. I guess we’ll see! I know… be careful what you wish for. But this time last year, we were having temps in the 70s. It would be a nice change to have a white Christmas.  At least driving around looking at Christmas lights would be more fun than pouring rain.
