Snow Business

Posted by mike on 28th January 2009

snow stormIt seems like these days we can’t get normal weather. We don’t just get a thunderstorm, we get tornadic weather. We don’t just get heat, we get scorched. Regular snowfall? Nope… blizzard. The Ohio Valley is one of the few places on Earth I know of that has temperature swings of 30° in a day. The weather here just sucks. If it weren’t such a pain, I’d love to live somewhere where at least the weather can be anticipated regularly. Of course, I guess weather extremes are getting to be the “norm” pretty much everywhere now.

So right now we are undergoing our latest adventure. It started with around 5″ of snow Monday night. That was enough to cancel schools, work, etc. Then we got around 1/2″ to 1″ of ICE yesterday and last night. Now, this morning, it’s snowing on top of the ice. We’ve gotten probably 3″ of fresh white stuff already. No school or work again today. Power is out everywhere to thousands of homes, though miraculously we still have it at the moment (it keeps flashing… I’ll be lucky if I can get this posted). They’ve declared states of emergency in several surrounding counties. Even Fort Knox is closed! Interstates are buried, too.

Anyhow, I went outside and snapped some pictures this morning. Well, actually I didn’t GO outside… I just stuck my head out the door. So I didn’t get anything that will win me a Pulitzer, but they give a good example of what we’ve got out there right now. You can click here to check them out or click the picture in the top corner.

Stop Thief!

Posted by mike on 21st January 2009

Oh, what a night! For the most part, last night was like any other. After watching a little TV, Emily headed to bed and I hit the computer to look up prices on a truck part I need. Around 1:00am I came upstairs to get my coffee and clothes ready for the next morning. At 2:00am, I was preparing to get in bed when headlights lit up our room and I saw someone’s shadow run across the window. And so it began…

Thinking that was a bit odd, I went to the window and looked out in time to see a car shut off its lights and pull up in front of a house down/across the street. A moment later, I saw a “dark figure” run around the Mustang parked in their driveway. I could tell it wasn’t the owners, so I decided it was suspicious enough to call the police. The dispatcher asked me about the car, so I gave the best description I could. It was dark and the car was about 100 yards away, so I couldn’t see it well. It didn’t help that my maglite flashlight was dying. She said they were dispatching an officer to check it out.

I returned to the kitchen and hung up the phone. Since my light was dying, I figured I’d grab my super-bright spotlight from the garage that uses my 19v drill battery. I returned to the bedroom, but thought I’d take one more look outside…. and surprise! There was someone in my neighbor’s van!! They are not usually up at 2am, so I made a split second decision. I slowly and quietly unlocked my door, then quickly shined the spotlight right on the person. I figured if it was my neighbor, no big deal. It was NOT my neighbor! He was trying to hide behind the van, but I still got a good look at him.  I was a bit unprepared for this (as was he), so I said “I see you! I’ve called the police and they’re coming for you!” He said “Thanks!” and took off running. I spotted him for as long as I could, but the van was between us. I then ran in to grab the bedroom phone and call the police again (and woke up Emily in the process).

Who IS That Guy?

Posted by mike on 8th January 2009

You know you do it. Everyone does. You’re watching a movie with your S-O (significant other) or friend and it starts driving you nuts! You’re racking your brain… it’s on the tip of your tongue… Finally, you can’t stand it! So you break down, hit the pause button (or whisper obnoxiously) and ask the obvious question: “Who IS that guy?! Isn’t he the dude that was in that one movie with [insert famous actor/actress name here]? You know, the one where they blew up the bank and then had that high-speed chase down the Interstate during rush hour so they could visit the little boy with cancer before the aliens and Russians blew up the planet?”

Well, ponder no more! Today I introduce you to Cracked.com’s Top 20 Best “That Guys” of all time! Cracked defines a “That Guy” as a “B-list character actor who’s just talented enough to secure bit parts in a handful of movies every year, but not quite good looking enough to become a brand-name star. Some specialize in playing villains and others in having freaky-enormous chest tattoos, but combined, these brave, barely handsome men have appeared in every single movie produced in the last decade.”

So check out the link above. I know within 20 seconds you’ll say “Oh yeah!! I’ve seen him in several movies!!” Unfortunately, 20 seconds after you close the link, you’ll forget every last one of their names. But they don’t mind… being a “That Guy” pays pretty well, I imagine. Enjoy! =)
